Crossroads of the Occupation

As the American news cycle is currently awash in the controversy surrounding Muslim US Congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib being denied entry into Israel at Trump’s urging, serious matters on the ground in Jerusalem, the ‘settlements’, the West Bank and Gaza persist, threatening social instability and renewed regional violence.  This is being overlooked to all of our peril.

I first traveled to Israel/Palestine in February of 2017 to begin production for the Jerusalem Prayer Project’s documentary series, ‘Warriors of the Heart’ with my Executive Producer, Stephen Fiske.  I had the good fortune of finding accommodations at the Tantur Ecumenical Center within the ‘settlements’ south of Jerusalem and adjacent to the West Bank. This hilltop campus is owned by the Vatican and run by Notre Dame University and provides a stunning refugee-like setting with an overlook toward the security barrier and military crossing near Gilo. It is on the ancient Hebron road, looking toward Bethlehem and sits at the crossroads of the occupation.

On my first morning at Tantur, still bleary-eyed by the flight from Los Angeles, I was greeted by a volunteer border, a member of the Bruderhof Christian Community who had been residing and working at the center for over a year with his wife.  At breakfast, John spoke beamingly of his time at Tantur and its proximity to Jerusalem, Hebron, and Bethlehem – the trifecta of the Abrahamic holy sites. I elaborated on my mission to engage with and interview grassroots interfaith peacemakers for a documentary and he was enthusiastic about the prospects.  He offered to be my guide to Bethlehem and of course I accepted, without having any idea what that actually meant.

I soon found myself descending the hilltop on foot, traversing a vast olive grove on our way to the security barrier and checkpoint where traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian to the West Bank must pass.  From Tantur’s commanding vantage point, the view of the security barrier is unobstructed for miles and is bathed in the glistening morning light; a seemingly perfect, sinuous and endless strip of vertical concrete, dividing the glorious landscape from its peoples.  A magnificent abomination indeed.

Behind us was a strategic highway under construction protecting and connecting Gilo, an Israeli settlement built on former Palestinian land, to the rest of Israel.  John had made this journey regularly and via his cellphone, contacted a Palestinian taxi on the other side of the security barrier to pick us up. At this surreal crossroads, I was marveling at the extraordinary moment, witnessing fist hand the very heart and origin of the Abrahamic faiths, under military occupation.  With each step, the size and scale of the security barrier overwhelm, until you get right up next to it and enter the pedestrian turnstiles that suck you in and push you out into a completely different reality.

John was looking for the taxi driver he had summoned, who had not yet materialized, so we decided to walk away toward Bethlehem.  The transition from the Israeli side of the barrier to the Palestinians is stark. In Israel, the concrete is clean, smooth, well-engineered.  On the Palestinian side, the wall transforms into a piece of extraordinary political art and dissent, where a broad range of artists from Palestine, Israel and around the world, including the great Bansky, have come here to confront the status quo of Palestinian oppression.

Amidst the chaos of street and sewer lines in a perpetual state of ‘improvement’ that never seems complete, and beneath the watchful eye of an Israeli military guard tower, one image on the wall caught my eye because it to depicted a ‘Statue of Liberty’ theme embedded in the work. As I approached the painting I saw that the seated figure was tearing-up while holding what seemed to be a dead rag-doll child, symbolizing the plight of the Palestinian people, and their betrayal by the United States.  The power of the moment caught me off guard. I felt a well of emotion spring up as I contemplated the implications of the wall – in both spiritual and practical terms. It’s a heinous expression of the dark side of humanity, a cynical effort to slowly crush and steal from your neighbors, that which has always been shared. It was a feeling of darkness and dread that I will never forget.

In 1997 construction began of an integrated system of nearly 500 miles of concrete security barriers and strategic, hardened super highways designed to connect settlements to the rest of Israel, while further isolating Palestinian towns and small villages. Today the project is nearing completion.  Billions of Dollars and Shekels later, Netanyahu and the Likuds, together with their compatriot American Zionists and Evangelical Christians in the US Congress and Senate, are apoplectic to suppress any narrative that questions the occupation, its origins, and intentions. It’s truly a well resourced, full-court press that frames any compassion expressed for Palestinian human rights, as a placation of terrorists.

The regime of separation imposed on Palestinians in the occupied territories is debilitating in a very real, day to day sense for all who reside in the West Bank.  For Israelis — the normalization of the occupation, the miles of concrete barriers and strategic highways, the checkpoints and gun turrets, warps their identity and sense of humanity.  People are being cajoled into embracing their happy, privileged lives, at the expense of their neighbors’ very liberty. Likud and their Trumpian partners are particularly fearful that if the unfiltered truth of the occupation is objectively communicated within Israel itself as well as to the outside world, the Netanyahu regime of fear would collapse from the sheer weight of its self-righteous greed and corruption.

Descending spirals of violence plague the interfaces between Palestinian and Israeli life in ‘settlements’ and are endemic to a system of disengagement on both sides of the barriers.

On August 8th, 18-year-old Yeshiva student, Pvt. Dvir Sorek dressed an IDF military recruit dressed in civilian clothes, was abducted from a bus stop while on his way to meet his Rabbi. He was transported and later knifed to death in Gush Etsion (Area C) South of Jerusalem, a historically volatile crossroads between Israeli Settlements and Palestinian lands.  It was under similar circumstances in 2014, from this very location that a series of kidnappings and multiple reprisal murders of Israelis and Palestinians became the flashpoint of “The 51 Day War” that would tear through the West Bank and Gaza. Thousands were killed and displaced, mainly Palestinians. Israeli aerial bombardments of Gaza City were followed by Palestinian rocket volleys into Southern Israel and Tel Aviv.  It was the worst and most brutal conflagration in the region since the 2nd Intifada in the early 2000s.

And just last week on August 11th at the Temple Mount in Palestinian East Jerusalem, right in the middle of afternoon prayers, when thousands of Palestinians had gathered, Israeli police escorted a group of Orthodox Jews into the Al Aqsa mosque and shrine compound that sits above Judaism’s Western Wall.  It is literally ground zero of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. The clear violation of international law was yet another obvious provocation by Israeli police that erupted into a tear gas-filled mêlée to clear Palestinians from the grounds of one of Islam’s holiest sites.

The background noise of the occupation finds ways into the mainstream consciousness of Israelis periodically, but for the Palestinians living under military rule, the boot is never far from their throats.  The strategic turbulence created by Israeli Conservative (Likud) leadership, the IDF and police, serve clear political and economic objectives domestically and within the United States. Last year’s symbolic opening of the United States Embassy in Jerusalem for example, timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel’s war of independence and what the Palestinians consider the ‘Nakba’ or catastrophe, was a grotesque display of smug political chicanery. Later that day the stark contrast of a near royal display of political hubris featuring all the main players of Israeli political will and their US counterparts, was eye-opening and shocked the entire world.  Luminaries included the likes of Casino Magnet Sheldon Adelson, Ivanka, and Jared Kushner, Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin and US Ambassador David Friedman — all hosted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.

The pleasantries of self-congratulatory power and wealth, juxtaposed to impoverished Palestinians indiscriminately being shot dead by Israeli sniper rounds was a striking example of how indifference to suffering and oppression, ultimately leads to mayhem and slaughter.  That tragic day, literally as the Jerusalem ceremony proceeded, thousands of Palestinian protesters massed along Israel’s southern border with Gaza. Amidst the burning tires and chaos – IDF beat down the onslaught of Palestinians from a safe distance with live sniper fire and drone drops of tear gas.  Hundreds would lose their lives with well over 1500 casualties. It was a grim reminder of what’s at stake for both Israel and Palestine and the prospects for peace in the region when rational, grassroots dialogue is missing from the equation.

Having just returned from my fourth trip to the West Bank and Jerusalem, working on a documentary about interfaith peacemakers — I know exactly why Trump and his Likud/Christian/Zionist enablers don’t want Congresswomen Omar and Tlaib visiting the West Bank and East Jerusalem. It’s clear these Members of Congress will not function as ‘run of the mill’, compliant Democrats when it comes to the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine. These women would surely engage with both Israeli and Palestinian grassroots activists and bear witness to the day to day indignities imposed on the Palestinians, that after seven long decades of military occupation, generate vast reservoirs of deep resentment.

Despite the bleak assessment of the situation, there is a new movement afoot that is grounded in direct, village to village, Israeli to Palestinian, Muslim to Jew, grassroots engagement pushing for a breakthrough.  For the past three years, I have been working with a group of extraordinary Israeli and Palestinian women who have formed one of the most vibrant and resilient social movements for reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians in recent years.

Women Wage Peace began their efforts following the brutal 2014 ’51 Day War’ as an act of desperate resignation for a better life, free of the oppression of a military state for both Israelis and Palestinians.  It was born out of the core belief that women are the healers and the arbiters who know the process of reconciliation, and a compulsion to assume the lead in Israeli society to bring forth a change in political leadership, to re-engage in a meaningful peace process.

Beginning with a core group of 40 Israeli and a handful of Palestinian women, fed up with the endless cycles of blood and violence, ‘Women Wage Peace’ had its genesis;  a true grass organization. After five years, they have grown to over 45,000 active members residing in virtually every corner of the country. They have succeeded in organizing mass, nationwide demonstrations of both Israeli and Palestinian women, committed to engagement and a common cause for peace.  And more importantly, they are working on strengthening their network of small scale outreach, education, and support for cross-cultural and inter-religious engagement. They model themselves after other successful women’s peace movements in Ireland and Liberia both of which became key players in the ending civil war, bloody genocide, and interreligious hatred and warfare.  Women Wage Peace’s stated mission is to initiate a renewed humanizing process, a movement for reconciliation and peace, coming from a feminist-inclusive leadership style and point of view. Central to their efforts is the creation of opportunities for Israeli and Palestinian women to meet, interact, and share space and time together.

Alliance for Middle East Peace Regional Director, Huda Abuarquob, is one many WWP Palestinian partners who, unlike their Israeli counterparts, must contend with the constraints of the occupation designed to discourage their ability to even meet.  Simple things such as water for a shower, electricity to charge your phone and freedom of movement and assembly are uncertain at best in the West Bank. Transportation delays often turn what should be a ten minute permitted taxi ride into Jerusalem, into a two-hour debacle of a detour and dehumanizing military control.

Women Wage Peace organizer, Israeli Rivi Diamond is one of the dozens of committed core members who cultivate the vision and mission of the organization through turbulent times. She has worked closely alongside Huda to craft messages and organizing strategies that transcend systemic, antagonisms that lead to division and war. She is forever cognizant of the formidable challenges and the entrenched patriarchy facing her Palestinian sisters with whom she collaborates.  ‘Women Wage Peace’ has proven itself to be the higher road to peace and is attracting increasing numbers of Palestinian and Israeli Settler women who are all longing for an end to the conflict.

The normalization of the inhumanity of the occupation amongst a majority of Israeli society is shocking – and by design.  It has been decades in the making – a rebuke and slap in the face to United Nations, and US and European diplomatic efforts to defend Palestinian rights, identity and sovereignty.  For people who visit Jerusalem and venture out into Palestinian towns and Israeli ‘settlements’, you cannot help but notice a system of military separation encompassing 500 miles of thirty-foot tall, barb-wired laced, concrete separation walls and strategic highways.  As an outside observer, the duality of integrated psychological and physical divides is breathtaking. But for Israelis in the ‘settlements’ however, ubiquitous militarization and the imposition of systemic structural, social, and economic barriers preventing Palestinians and Israelis from interacting, is mesmerizing.  Many Israelis and Palestinians will literally live side by side one another their entire lives, and never know of or interact with the other. This architecture of separation is effective and intended to disrupt normal human interaction between peoples who have shared the same land, culture, and religious beliefs, for millennia.

The negative psychological impact of the Israeli occupation of Palestine, on all the Semitic peoples of the region, runs deep and is morally troubling and a challenge to comprehend.  But seeing and witnessing what the occupation looks and feels like in real-time, is troubling in the reality of its pernicious incivility. The United States of America is footing the bill and providing diplomatic cover for an unprecedented and unnecessary humanitarian crisis in Palestine that has regional and global implications.  The injustices going on in the West Bank and Gaza are cruel and disturbing, as are the Hamas rockets fired into Southern Israel. What is too often overlooked however is that Israel and Palestine are two sides of the same coin of Semitic peoples of the region. They must stop harming each other as they are both wise and ancient people, deserving of freedom, dignity and a homeland.  If peace and reconciliation can be found here, there is hope for the whole world.
